Justices Misra and Chelameswar appointed judges of SC

5.10.2011 (UNI) Delhi High Court Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Kerala High Court Chief Justice Jasti Chelameswar have been appointed Judges of the Supreme Court by President Pratibha Patil, the Law and Justice Ministry has announced.

The appointments in that order of seniority take effect from the respective dates of their assumption of office, a Ministry statement said last night.

Justice Misra enrolled as an advocate in February 1977 and practised in the Orissa High Court and dealt with constitutional, civil, criminal, revenue, service and sales tax matters.

He was appointed an Additional Judge of the Orissa High Court in January 1996 and transferred to the Madhya Pradesh High Court in March 1997. He became permanent Judge in December 1997.

Justice Misra became Chief Justice of the Patna High Court in December 2009 and Chief Justice of Delhi High Court in May 2010.

Chelameswar enrolled as an advocate in 1976 and practised in the Andhra Pradesh High Court at Hyderabad dealing with Constitutional law, election laws, central excise, customs, income tax and criminal law.

He was appointed Standing Counsel of AP Lokayukta in 1985-1986, government pleader for Home Affairs in 1988-1989 and senior counsel in 1995. He was appointed Additional Advocate General in October 1995.

He was elevated as Additional Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in June 1997 and made permanent Judge in May 1999. He was elevated as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court in May 2007 and transferred to Kerala High Court as Chief Justice in March 2010. UNI
